Max Dowman scored twice as Arsenal continued their impressive start to the season with a 4 2 victory over Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup, securing their place in the fourth round.
The 16 year old was handed his first start of the season alongside 17 year old centre back Marli Salmon, and Dowman quickly made his mark.
He opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a superb individual effort. After winning possession in midfield, Dowman exchanged passes with Eberechi Eze before driving into the box. He left two defenders on the ground and calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to put Arsenal ahead.
Arsenal doubled their advantage when Noni Madueke finished from close range after Mikel Merino lifted a clever ball over the Ipswich defence.
Dowman added his second after the break, showing composure to bring down a pass from Martin Zubimendi before guiding the ball into the far bottom corner.
Merino then made it 4 0 when his effort struck the inside of the post and found the back of the net.
Ipswich managed to reduce the deficit through Anis Mehmeti, who finished from Jack Clarke’s pass, before Chuba Akpom added another with a neat turn and finish. However, the late response was not enough to change the outcome.
Both teams made significant changes to their starting line ups, with a combined 19 alterations from the sides that featured in their respective Premier League matches at the weekend.
Arsenal have now won every match they have played this season. They will learn their fourth round opponents on Wednesday after the draw following Manchester United’s meeting with Brighton, scheduled for 20:00 BST.
