The battle for the 2026 Ballon d’Or has taken a fresh turn following the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup, with England captain Harry Kane emerging as the leading contender ahead of the official shortlist announcement.
The prestigious award will honour the player judged to have delivered the best performances during the 2025 to 2026 European football season. Performances recorded between August 1, 2025, and July 31, 2026, will be considered before the winner is announced later this year.
France Football is expected to reveal the 30 player shortlist in August, with the winner set to be crowned at the annual Ballon d’Or ceremony scheduled for October.
Spain’s World Cup triumph has significantly influenced the latest rankings, pushing several of the country’s standout performers higher in the race. Even so, Kane continues to lead the pack after enjoying one of the finest seasons of his career.
The Bayern Munich striker delivered an extraordinary campaign, scoring 73 goals and contributing eight assists. He guided the German champions to Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and DFL Supercup success while also scoring six goals as England reached the semi finals of the World Cup, strengthening his position as the current favourite.
Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal remains one of the strongest challengers after helping Spain lift the World Cup and also winning both La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup. The teenage sensation ended the season with 26 goals and 21 assists, although some analysts believe he was less influential during Spain’s biggest matches at the tournament.
Lionel Messi has once again forced his way into the conversation despite being 39 years old. The Argentine icon inspired Inter Miami to the MLS Cup title after recording 44 goals and 30 assists during the season before adding eight goals and four assists as Argentina reached the World Cup final.
Michael Olise also enjoyed an outstanding year with Bayern Munich. The French winger registered 26 goals and an impressive 41 assists while helping the club secure three domestic trophies. His performances at the World Cup were equally remarkable, providing a record seven assists during France’s run to the semi finals.
Real Madrid may have ended the campaign without lifting a major trophy, but Kylian Mbappe’s individual numbers remain exceptional. The French captain scored 58 goals and supplied 14 assists across all competitions before claiming the World Cup Golden Boot after finishing as the tournament’s highest scorer with 10 goals.
Manchester City’s Rodri has returned to Ballon d’Or contention following Spain’s World Cup victory. After struggling with injuries for much of the club season, the midfielder rediscovered his best form on the international stage and was named the tournament’s Best Player.
Paris Saint Germain forward Ousmane Dembele, who currently holds the Ballon d’Or title, has slipped down the rankings despite helping his club win the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1 and several other honours. Injuries and France’s exit in the World Cup semi finals have weakened his chances of defending the award.
Erling Haaland also remains firmly in contention after another prolific campaign. The Manchester City striker scored 58 goals while helping his club win the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. He also inspired Norway to its first World Cup quarter final appearance since 1998, finishing the tournament with seven goals.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s excellent performances for Paris Saint Germain played a major role in the club’s Champions League triumph, particularly during the knockout rounds. However, Georgia’s failure to qualify for the World Cup has reduced his chances of challenging for football’s biggest individual prize.
Completing the top ten is Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi, one of the biggest revelations of the season. The 19 year old impressed throughout Spain’s World Cup winning campaign, helping his country concede only one goal on the way to the title while earning the tournament’s Best Young Player award.
Attention will now turn to France Football’s official shortlist, which is expected to be released in August before voting begins ahead of the October awards ceremony.
Although Harry Kane currently leads the race, the competition remains far from settled. With stars such as Lamine Yamal, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and several members of Spain’s World Cup winning squad still in contention, the battle for the 2026 Ballon d’Or promises to remain one of football’s biggest talking points in the months ahead.
