Nigerians travelling to the United States and Mexico now have a unique opportunity to enjoy a familiar social experience abroad without paying more for it, following the launch of Bar De Change, Nigeria’s first social currency exchange by Heineken.
The initiative gives travellers who purchase a Heineken in Nigeria access to a gift card that can be redeemed for another Heineken at selected locations in the United States and Mexico. The idea is to ensure customers enjoy the same premium experience overseas at the equivalent value of what they paid back home.
Running from July 7 to July 19, the campaign invites eligible travellers departing through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos to visit the Heineken bar at Sapphire Lounge before boarding their flights. After purchasing a Heineken, they will receive a Bar De Change gift card, which can later be redeemed at participating Heineken bars in the United States or Mexico.
The concept goes beyond simply buying a drink. It is designed to help travellers carry a familiar social connection with them as they experience new countries, making it easier to enjoy memorable moments wherever they go.
The inspiration behind Bar De Change comes from the belief that while destinations may change, the desire to connect with people and share enjoyable experiences remains the same. However, fluctuating exchange rates often make those same experiences much more expensive for Nigerian travellers once they leave the country.
By removing that difference in value, the initiative allows consumers to enjoy the same Heineken experience abroad without feeling the impact of higher foreign prices.
Travellers who purchase their drink at the Sapphire Lounge in Murtala Muhammed International Airport will receive a gift card that can be redeemed at participating outlets across the United States and Mexico, creating a smooth and convenient experience from departure to arrival.
The programme follows the successful rollout of Bar De Change in South Africa and reflects Heineken’s commitment to developing ideas inspired by the everyday experiences of consumers in different markets.
For Nigerian travellers, it offers a simple but meaningful way to stay connected to familiar moments, no matter where their journey takes them.
Speaking on the initiative, Maria Shadeko, Portfolio Manager for Premium Beer at Nigerian Breweries Plc, said Heineken has always believed that the best moments are those shared with others.
According to her, Bar De Change brings that vision to life by transforming a familiar travel routine into a memorable social experience, allowing Nigerian travellers to enjoy a Heineken abroad at the same value they would receive at home.
She added that the initiative aligns with Heineken’s global “Fans Have More Friends” campaign, which highlights how shared experiences can bring people together across different cultures, languages and countries.
