Belgium have reached an agreement to appoint former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel as the next head coach of the national team, with the Dutchman set to oversee the Red Devils until June 2028.
The appointment is expected to become official once the remaining paperwork is completed. Although contracts have not yet been signed, all parties are understood to have agreed on the terms, paving the way for Van Bommel to succeed Rudi Garcia following Belgium’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development on Wednesday, describing the move as a completed agreement. According to him, Van Bommel has accepted a deal that will keep him in charge through June 2028, with only the formal announcement left before the appointment is finalized.
The role will mark Van Bommel’s first experience as a national team manager after establishing himself at club level. The former Dutch international has previously managed PSV Eindhoven, VfL Wolfsburg and Royal Antwerp, where he enjoyed one of the most successful periods of his coaching career by guiding the Belgian side to a historic league title and domestic cup triumph during the 2022 and 2023 campaign.
Belgium will be looking to the 48 year old coach to lead the next phase of the team’s development as preparations begin for the UEFA Euro 2028 qualifying campaign. His arrival is expected to play a key role in the country’s ongoing rebuilding process as the Red Devils seek to return to the top ranks of international football.
