Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed regret over Nigeria’s failure to secure a place at this year’s FIFA World Cup and also missing out on the Africa Cup of Nations title, offering an apology to Nigerians for the outcomes.
Chelle spoke after Nigeria’s friendly win against Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz in London, a result that gave the team a positive finish despite recent disappointments. His comments were shared through the Nigeria Football Federation.
The Malian coach admitted that not qualifying for the World Cup was painful, noting that it would have been a proud moment to lead Nigeria on football’s biggest stage. He also acknowledged the expectations that came with the Africa Cup of Nations campaign, where the team fell short of the title many had hoped for.
He explained that while efforts were made to push the team forward, football often delivers unpredictable results. According to him, his focus has always been on improving the squad and giving his best in the role.
Chelle also took time to appreciate the support from Nigerians throughout the journey, describing it as encouraging even in difficult moments. He reiterated his commitment to the national team and said he remains ready to continue working to improve performances whenever called upon.
Reflecting on his experience, he added that he is constantly learning on the job and remains grateful for the opportunity to lead the Super Eagles.
The apology came shortly after Nigeria ended their London fixture on a winning note against Jamaica, a result that provided some relief as attention shifts to rebuilding and future competitions.
