Chelle, Seven NPFL Stars Head to London for Unity Cup Duty

Zoyols News
Eric Chelle and seven home based players invited to the Nigeria national football team are expected to depart Abuja for London as preparations intensify for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament.

The delegation, which also includes members of the technical crew and officials of the Nigeria Football Federation, will travel through Morocco before arriving in England for the competition scheduled to take place between May 26 and May 30 at The Valley in London.

Zoyols News gathered that Chelle recently unveiled a 27 man squad for the tournament, combining experienced internationals with fresh faces as Nigeria prepares to defend the Unity Cup title.

The Super Eagles are billed to begin their campaign against Zimbabwe’s Warriors before facing either Jamaica or India in the next stage of the mini tournament.

However, the team has already suffered a setback following the absence of highly rated Nigerian youngster Zadok Yohanna.

The 18 year old winger, who currently plays for Swedish side AIK Football, was initially included in Chelle’s squad but will no longer participate after his club refused to release him for national team duty.

According to the Swedish club, the decision was based on medical and sporting reasons as the player is still recovering from injury and undergoing rehabilitation.

In a statement released by the club, AIK expressed pride in Yohanna’s invitation to the national team but explained that allowing him to travel at this stage could affect his recovery process.

Despite the setback, preparations for the Unity Cup continue as Nigeria aims to retain the title with a blend of local and foreign based talents.
