British actor David Jonsson has officially been introduced as the next Black Panther, stepping into one of Marvel’s most iconic roles in the upcoming Black Panther III.
The announcement was made during Marvel Studios’ presentation at Comic Con on Saturday, where the studio also confirmed that the highly anticipated film is set to arrive in cinemas on December 15, 2028.
Jonsson, who earned widespread praise for his roles in the HBO drama Industry and the 2025 film The Long Walk, will play T’Challa’s son, the next heir to Wakanda’s legendary protector. The character follows the legacy of the late Chadwick Boseman, whose unforgettable portrayal of T’Challa helped turn Black Panther into a global phenomenon.
Boseman captivated audiences around the world with his performance in the 2018 blockbuster before his death from colon cancer in 2020 at the age of 43. His impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to be celebrated by fans across the globe.
Speaking after the announcement before thousands of excited fans, Jonsson shared his appreciation for being entrusted with the role and becoming part of the Marvel family.
He described the opportunity as an honour, a privilege and a blessing, while choosing not to reveal too much about the project. According to him, he would rather allow the film to speak for itself when it reaches audiences.
Award winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler is returning to direct the third chapter of the franchise after leading the first two films. He revealed that the story of Black Panther III will focus on T’Challa’s son as he grows into adulthood and embraces the responsibility of carrying forward his father’s legacy as Wakanda’s legendary superhero.
Released in 2018, the original Black Panther became one of Marvel’s biggest successes, earning $1.3 billion at the global box office. The film featured an acclaimed cast led by Chadwick Boseman alongside Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, Forest Whitaker, Danai Gurira and Letitia Wright, with several of the stars returning for the sequel.
