The Federal Government has initiated the evacuation of Nigerians currently stranded in Iran, moving them across the Armenian border as regional tensions escalate.
This operation comes in the wake of a crisis that erupted on February 28, following coordinated military strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel. The attacks triggered retaliatory missile and drone strikes across the region, raising concerns about a broader conflict.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, confirmed the evacuation on her X account on Tuesday. She explained that officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran are actively coordinating the safe passage of citizens who wish to leave the country.
Dabiri-Erewa reassured Nigerians that none of the country’s citizens in Iran have been harmed amid the ongoing tensions. Embassy personnel remain stationed at the border to receive and assist evacuees.
Her post emphasized, “Willing Nigerians are being escorted across the Armenian border by officials of the Nigerian Embassy in Iran for safe passage. No Nigerian in Iran has been affected by the war, and embassy staff are on hand to support everyone who chooses to leave.”
