In a significant move toward digital accessibility, European smart technology firm MediaKing has officially entered the Nigerian market. Through a strategic partnership with Play Network Africa, the company aims to establish one of the most expansive free high-density public Wi-Fi networks in the country. Operating under the banner of MediaKing Nigeria, the project is set to kick off in Lagos and Abuja, with an ambitious initial goal of deploying between 5,000 and 10,000 hotspots in each major city.
The technology behind this rollout has already proven its worth in European hubs like Split, Croatia. In those locations, MediaKing successfully implemented systems across busy waterfronts and commercial districts, specifically engineered to manage thousands of users connecting at the same time without a drop in speed. The infrastructure is built to scale with demand, making it a perfect fit for the high-density environments typical of Nigeria’s urban centers.
Darko Kraljevic, the founder of MediaKing, explained that the system was designed to perform under extreme pressure. He noted that in high-traffic European cities, the primary challenge is maintaining consistency as more people log on. He believes this experience is directly applicable to Lagos and Abuja, where the sheer volume of potential users is the defining factor for any tech infrastructure. The rollout will focus on essential locations such as markets, transport hubs, schools, hospitals, and busy commercial centers.
Beyond just offering internet access, the platform introduces a unique “Wi-Fi Billboard” communication tool. This feature allows governments, brands, and institutions to engage directly with the public through the connection portal. Furthermore, the system provides valuable data insights, helping organizations understand usage patterns and engagement levels within specific zones. Afam Anyika, CEO of MediaKing Nigeria, highlighted that the project is about more than just data—it’s about creating a unified platform for communication and smarter city living.
The initiative also carries a strong focus on local development. MediaKing has committed to building local technical capacity by training Nigerian engineers to manage and support the network long-term. By investing in local operations, the company hopes to foster digital inclusion and provide a foundation for future smart city initiatives that could eventually reach across the entire federation. This expansion represents a major step in bringing professional-grade, free connectivity to the heart of Nigeria’s most active communities.
