Abuja will host the Confederation of African Athletics Region II Elective Congress on December 12, as the regional athletics body prepares to choose a new leadership team that will oversee its affairs for the next four years.
The congress is expected to draw delegates and athletics administrators from the 15 member countries that make up CAA Region II, with discussions set to centre on the future of athletics development across the region alongside the election of a new executive council.
Attention will also be on Nigeria’s Chief Tonobok Okowa, the current President of CAA Region II and Senior Vice President of the Confederation of African Athletics, who heads into the congress as the incumbent leader.
Okowa’s tenure has been widely associated with efforts to strengthen regional athletics competitions and deepen collaboration among member nations, making the upcoming congress an important moment for the future of the body.
Beyond the leadership contest, the Abuja gathering is expected to shape conversations around the direction of athletics administration in West Africa and other parts of the region, with major issues likely to include talent development, sports infrastructure, competitions and stronger regional partnerships.
With Abuja set to welcome athletics stakeholders from across the continent, expectations are already building around a congress that could play a major role in defining the next phase of CAA Region II.
