Ugi Augustine Ugi’s path into the world of technology wasn’t paved with silver spoons or childhood dreams of coding. Like many young Nigerians, his family had hoped he would pursue medicine. However, a series of unexpected events and a lucky text message redirected his life, leading him from a lab prefect role to becoming the founder of Nugi Technologies. Today, as a sickle cell warrior, he is channeling that same resilience into building a Tier IV data centre in Nigeria.
The spark for his tech career was ignited in a secondary school computer lab set up by MTN. While his peers focused on biology and chemistry, Ugi was captivated by the intranet-connected desktops. This curiosity led him to save every penny for a Nokia 3310 in 2007 and, eventually, a flash drive that he carried like jewelry his most prized possession because it held all his source files and eBooks.
A defining moment came in 2006. After his JAMB results were withheld and a brief stint at a College of Education was cut short by illness, Ugi found a web development course at SoftNet Calabar. The tuition was a steep N150,000. With his parents unable to bridge the gap, Ugi sent a single SMS to the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” game show using his father’s phone. He won N20,000, and N15,000 of that prize money became the seed capital for his career. By 2008, he was already out-earning his parents, building websites for NGOs and schools while working in a cybercafé.
Technology is more than just a profession for Ugi; it is his lifeline. Living with sickle cell anemia, he uses high-end wearables to monitor his heart rate and blood oxygen levels in real-time. In an environment like Nigeria, where heat and stress can trigger a crisis, these digital tools act as an early warning system. He lives by the data: if his blood oxygen drops or his stress levels spike, he shuts down and rests. Technology hasn’t cured his condition, but it has certainly mastered the art of keeping him stable and productive.
This philosophy of efficiency and survival carries over into his business. Ugi is a firm believer in simplicity. He has no patience for over-engineered platforms or endless forms. At Nugi Technologies, the focus is on showing value quickly a principle born from his own shrinking attention span and the need for tools that just work. He stays sharp by following AI and health-tech innovators on X and LinkedIn, always looking for ways to merge data with African healthcare.
Currently, his most ambitious project is the development of a Tier IV data centre in Calabar, Cross River State. Part of a larger smart city initiative, this project aims to keep African data and AI solutions hosted locally. While the state government is a partner, the project is a private-sector-led effort to ensure that Africa’s digital infrastructure is built by Africans, for Africans.
Despite his busy schedule overseeing global teams, Ugi remains intentional about his downtime. He balances high-stakes tech development with a love for football and a strict rule of “blanking out” on weekends to recover. For a man who started with a N100 text message, the goal is no longer just about personal success it’s about building a sustainable future for the millions of people across the continent who, like him, are using technology to defy the odds.
