Renowned filmmaker Femi Odugbemi has paid glowing tribute to veteran actor Olu Jacobs, highlighting the monumental impact the legendary icon brought to the Nigerian film industry. Reflecting on the foundational years of Nollywood, Odugbemi pointed out that Jacobs had already established a thriving international career, boasting impressive acting credits in major television and film productions across the United Kingdom.
Rather than remaining abroad, Jacobs made the decisive choice to return home. He poured the immense weight of his reputation, exceptional craft, and global acclaim into an emerging, highly uncertain Nollywood that contemporary cynics and experts routinely dismissed as a venture with zero future. According to Odugbemi, whether tackling massive leading roles or smaller supporting parts, Jacobs instantly imbued every production with a profound sense of gravity and unmatched commanding presence.
By setting such an uncompromising standard, the veteran actor fundamentally proved that artistic excellence could proudly wear a Nigerian face, that local stories deserved global respect, and that home-grown actors possessed the pedigree to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with anyone on any world stage.
Closing his reflections, Odugbemi emphasized that any contemporary performer finding their creative calling in Nollywood today, alongside every filmmaker who has successfully built a global brand and reaped the industry’s widespread prosperity, owes a profound debt of gratitude to this extraordinary pioneer.
