Former Big Brother Naija housemate Ike Onyema has shared some candid reflections on his journey during the 2019 “Pepper Dem” season, pointing out his biggest oversight while competing on the popular reality show. Speaking in a recent interview, the reality star turned entrepreneur admitted that he completely misjudged what it took to win the hearts of the audience and walk away with the grand prize.
Onyema explained that he entered the house with a purely competitive mindset, believing that consistently winning daily challenges and tasks would be enough to secure the ultimate victory. He later realized that reality television requires a deeper, more emotional connection with the viewers at home. He joked that if he could go back, he would not hesitate to let his guard down and show his emotional side, even if it meant crying on screen to let the audience connect with his vulnerable moments.
Despite his strong performance and winning numerous tasks throughout the season, Onyema revealed that his actual take-home earnings from his first appearance on the show amounted to less than four million Naira. He noted that the cash prizes came in smaller, cumulative bits, mostly ranging between three hundred thousand and five hundred thousand Naira per task, which did not quite add up to the massive windfall many viewers assumed he walked away with.
When the conversation shifted to his highly publicized relationship inside the house, the reality star maintained that he had absolutely no regrets about dating a fellow housemate. He clarified that their connection was completely genuine and not a calculated strategy designed for the cameras. As someone who naturally prioritizes business and financial growth over romance, Onyema viewed the relationship as a sincere experience that he thoroughly enjoyed while it lasted.
Transitioning from television back to business, the American-born entrepreneur also shared his reasons for moving back to Nigeria. Despite the comforts of the United States, Onyema found that Nigeria offers a unique brand of operational freedom for starting a business. He shared his experience of setting up a beverage retail store, noting that securing a liquor license in Nigeria was incredibly fast and straightforward through local networking, whereas his repeated attempts to get licensed in the United States faced constant rejections and bureaucratic delays.
However, this business freedom comes with its own set of challenges. Onyema admitted that building wealth in Nigeria demands a level of grit and mental stamina he had never experienced before. He expressed profound admiration for the resilient spirit of everyday Nigerians, noting how people maintain their joy and optimism even when facing severe economic hardships.
Looking back at his post-reality show financial journey, Onyema openly discussed the costly missteps he made along the way. He admitted to overspending on building a luxury image through high-end stylists and photo shoots, while also losing money by investing in unverified business proposals brought forward by friends. When asked if relationships with women had played a part in his financial setbacks, he laughed off the suggestion, stating that while making money remains a continuous hustle, attracting attention has never been his problem.
