Lionel Messi has been included in Argentina’s squad for a friendly against Benin Republic in October, with the game expected to mark the end of his international career.
The 39 year old announced his decision to retire from international football in August, following Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. His decision also came after the death of his father, Jorge, as Messi reflected on his future in football.
Messi, who led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, admitted that walking away from the national team was a painful decision.
The Inter Miami forward said ending his time with La Albiceleste had affected him deeply, but explained that he had given everything he could and felt he had nothing more to offer.
The eight time Ballon d’Or winner leaves behind a remarkable international record. Messi is Argentina’s all time leading scorer and most capped player, with 125 goals in 207 appearances for his country.
Argentine Football Association President Claudio Tapia confirmed that the team wanted Messi to have a fitting farewell in front of his home supporters.
“We made the decision to invite the best player in the world, the symbol of our national team, our captain, Lionel Andres Messi, so that he can have the farewell he truly deserves on 6 October here in Argentina,” Tapia said.
The friendly against Benin Republic is therefore expected to provide an emotional occasion as Argentina prepares to honour one of the greatest players in the history of the national team.
