Mourinho Defends Benfica Against Racism Claims After Vinicius Clash

Zoyols

In a post-match atmosphere charged with both celebration and controversy, Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has stepped forward to defend his club’s reputation against allegations of racism. The seasoned coach was speaking to Amazon Prime on Tuesday night following a heated Champions League knockout play-off first leg, where Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior claimed he was racially abused by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni.

The match itself was decided by a moment of brilliance from Vinicius, whose sensational goal secured a 1-0 victory for the Spanish giants. However, the focus quickly shifted from the scoreboard to the sidelines. Zoyols Blog reports that Mourinho sought to de-escalate the tension by sharing the advice he gave to the Brazilian forward immediately after the incident. He encouraged the player to focus on the magnitude of his goal and simply return to the pitch to continue the game.

Addressing the specific nature of the accusation, Mourinho was firm in his stance that Benfica has no room for prejudice. He reminded Vinicius and the wider public of the club’s rich history, pointing out that the most legendary figure to ever wear the Benfica jersey, Eusebio, was a Black man. For Mourinho, this history serves as definitive proof that the institution is fundamentally built on inclusivity.

While both players involved offered differing accounts of what was said on the pitch, the manager chose to remain neutral regarding the specific exchange between Vinicius and Prestianni. He made it clear that he prefers to stay independent of the he-said-she-said nature of the dispute. Instead, his priority was to protect the integrity of his team, stating emphatically that the last thing anyone could call Benfica is a racist club.
