The Nigerian Navy has recorded a significant breakthrough in its ongoing fight against maritime crime, intercepting approximately 44,000 liters of suspected illegally refined petroleum products in Rivers State. The successful operation, which took place along the Degema, Ogbogoro, and Ogbologo axis, also led to the arrest of eight suspects linked to the illicit trade.
According to a statement from the Director of Naval Information, Commodore Abiodun Folorunsho, the mission was carried out by personnel from the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PATHFINDER. Acting on credible intelligence, the naval patrol team intercepted two large wooden boats heavily laden with what is believed to be illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil, commonly known as diesel.
While eight individuals were taken into custody during the raid, some armed accomplices managed to flee the scene upon sighting the naval team. Reports indicate that the arrested suspects and the seized products are currently being held for further investigation. They are expected to be handed over to the relevant authorities for potential prosecution in the coming days.
Commodore Folorunsho noted that this latest achievement is in direct alignment with the standing orders of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas. The naval chief has consistently mandated intensified operations to root out crude oil theft and other maritime crimes that threaten the nation’s economy.
The Navy has reaffirmed its dedication to protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain and critical national assets. Moving forward, the authorities intend to maintain the current momentum through intelligence-driven operations and enhanced patrols. By strengthening collaborations with other security agencies, the Navy aims to ensure that the nation’s waterways remain hostile to oil thieves and economic saboteurs.
