Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has given Edo Queens a cash reward of ₦50 million after the team won both the 2025/26 Nigeria Women’s Football League and the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League.
During the presentation at the Festival Hall, Government House in Benin City, the governor said the achievement brings honour to Edo State and Nigeria at large. He praised the players for their courage and resilience throughout the campaign.
The WAFU-B final against Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies ended 2-2 after full time, leading to a penalty shootout. Edo Queens stayed calm and won the shootout 4-1 to lift the regional title.
Okpebholo said he grew more confident after watching the Edo Queens goalkeeper during the shootout. He noted that her movements and efforts to distract the opposing players gave the team a mental edge.
He also commended the head coach, technical crew and other officials for their contributions to the success.
The governor added that he was rewarding the team with ₦50 million because the victory means a lot to the people of Edo State. He also thanked the Edo Broadcasting Service for providing live coverage of the final, which allowed many Nigerians to follow the historic win.
