Afrobeats sensation Omah Lay opened up about a misconception that almost held him back from collaborating with superstar Davido—a misunderstanding that ultimately led to their Grammy-nominated hit, With You.
Speaking on the Grammy red carpet in an interview shared by Zoyols Blog, Omah Lay recalled how he once believed Davido wasn’t a fan of his music. The realization came unexpectedly while he was at home, scrolling through clips of the DMW boss reacting to his songs.
“I was at home, just going through it, and I saw it—I lost my mind,” he said. “I didn’t know Davido was like that. I thought we had a beef. I thought he didn’t like me.”
That early confusion quickly faded, and the duo’s connection turned out to be effortless. “It was funny, and we connected so well after that. Boom—magic happened,” he added.
Their collaboration, With You, released in 2025, marked a major milestone for Omah Lay, earning him his first Grammy nomination. When asked about his expectations for the award, he acknowledged the strength of Nigeria’s representation.
“Me and Davido, of course,” he said. “But Burna is there, Ayra is there, Wizkid is there. Any of us—we are repping Nigeria.”
Though the award ultimately went to South Africa’s Tyla for Push 2 Start, Omah Lay’s nomination underscores his growing influence in Afrobeats and highlights Nigeria’s continued impact on the global music stage.
