President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to developing critical infrastructure in the South-East region, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with state governments to drive strategic interests.
Speaking at a public lecture in Umuahia, Abia State, the President highlighted various initiatives aimed at boosting socioeconomic growth in the zone. Represented by Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Ude, Tinubu cited the concession of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport as a testament to the Federal Government’s efforts to reposition key infrastructure.
The ongoing airport project at Nsulu in Abia State and the establishment of the South East Development Commission were also referenced as evidence of the administration’s commitment to fast-tracking development in the region. According to Tinubu, these efforts are designed to create jobs, improve connectivity, and enhance commerce.
The President noted that the completion of the Port Harcourt-Aba Railway would significantly boost economic activity in the region, while the approval of $3 billion for the Eastern Rail Line and $508 million for upgrading eastern ports underscores the administration’s focus on large-scale infrastructure investment.
Tinubu emphasized that the South-East is crucial to Nigeria’s national development, particularly in achieving the country’s one-trillion-dollar economy target by 2030. He commended the region’s entrepreneurial spirit and economic presence nationwide, describing it as a testament to the region’s commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress.
The President assured that the Federal Government would continue to provide opportunities for all Nigerians to realize their potential and contribute to economic growth, emphasizing the importance of engaging young people productively to reduce crime and drive GDP growth.
