Nigerian singer and songwriter Simi Kosoko has responded to renewed online criticism over some of her old social media posts, clarifying that the messages being circulated do not reflect her current views or character. The controversy resurfaced after the artist recently joined public conversations condemning sexual violence, which triggered social media users to dig up past tweets from 2012 and 2013.
The discussion intensified following her strong stance against sexual assault, where she called for harsher punishment for rapists during online conversations about a viral case that had been widely discussed on social media. Her comments sparked debate, with supporters praising her advocacy while critics questioned some of her older posts. In response, Simi released a statement explaining that the tweets were taken out of context and reflected her life at a much earlier stage in her career.
She explained that the posts dated back to 2012, a period when she was living with her mother and helping out at her mother’s daycare centre while pursuing her music career. According to her, she often shared everyday experiences online the way many social media users did at the time. She added that many of the tweets were simply lighthearted observations about children she interacted with at the daycare, emphasising that there was nothing inappropriate behind them.
The singer also stated that she would not allow her past posts to be used to create false narratives about her personality or beliefs. She acknowledged that some of the posts had been deleted by her team due to their sensitive nature, although she personally preferred keeping them as part of her history. She explained that the decision was made to protect her family and avoid unnecessary public misunderstanding.
Among the posts that resurfaced online were light and casual messages from her early social media days, including playful comments about children’s behaviour and random daily thoughts. One of the widely circulated posts asked if anyone had ever used breast milk in baking, while others included humorous comments about children at the daycare and personal interactions she found funny at the time.
Simi strongly rejected claims that the posts suggested any form of inappropriate behaviour. She maintained that she has always been vocal against sexual violence and has consistently supported efforts to protect women and children. She stressed that her recent statements about rape were not new positions but reflections of beliefs she has held for years.
The singer concluded by stating that she has never claimed to be perfect but remains firm in her stance against sexual violence. The debate continues across social media, with users expressing mixed opinions about how past online posts should be interpreted in relation to present-day public advocacy.
