The APC Progressive Mandate Group has stepped into the heated political atmosphere of Rivers State, demanding an immediate halt to the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, the group described the move as not only unconstitutional and politically motivated but also a direct insult to the peace agreement mediated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The group’s national coordinator, Comrade Ayodele Alonge, warned that the current path taken by the Rivers State House of Assembly is built on a shaky legal foundation. He argued that pushing forward with the impeachment could destabilize the state and undo months of delicate diplomatic work. Alonge emphasized that the process is an affront to the President, who personally stepped in to mediate between Governor Fubara, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the state lawmakers.
The charges leveled against the Governor by the Assembly include claims of extra-budgetary spending, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and failing to comply with Supreme Court rulings on legislative autonomy. Similar accusations of reckless spending have been aimed at the deputy governor. However, the APC Progressive Mandate Group maintains that these efforts flatly contradict the reconciliation pact signed last year. They argue that since the peace deal allowed the Governor to continue his tenure alongside Wike’s interests, reopening these hostilities is an irresponsible challenge to the President’s authority.
A significant shift in the state’s political landscape was also highlighted by the group. Alonge noted that Governor Fubara’s defection from the PDP to the APC in December 2025 has significantly boosted the ruling party’s strength in Rivers State. This move triggered a wave of high-profile defections, including big names like former PDP national chairman Uche Secondus and former Governor Peter Odili. The group finds it ironic that the party is now seeing internal moves to undermine a Governor who has brought such heavyweights into its fold.
The group further criticized the Assembly’s stance on budget implementation, insisting the lawmakers are overstepping their bounds. They accused loyalists of the FCT Minister within the House of driving a purely political agenda. To restore order, the APC Progressive Mandate Group is calling on the National Assembly to intervene and protect the constitutional process. They are demanding a full withdrawal of the impeachment notice and a public apology to President Tinubu, warning that allowing this to proceed would set a dangerous and chaotic precedent for the entire country.
