Team Nigeria will depart for Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday, October 13, ahead of the inaugural African Boxing Elite Championships scheduled to take place from October 15 to 28, 2026.
The Nigerian team comprises 10 boxers, with five male and five female athletes set to compete across their respective weight categories. The competition will provide an opportunity for the country to test its strength against some of Africa’s best elite boxers.
According to a statement issued on Monday by Kola Daniel, Special Adviser on Media to the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Nigerian delegation consists of 19 members, including athletes and officials.
The contingent is expected to arrive in Nairobi on Wednesday, October 14, a day before the competition begins. The schedule will give the team time to settle in and complete the necessary preparations before the opening bouts.
Nigeria’s participation in the inaugural championship reflects its ambition to remain competitive in African boxing while providing its athletes with valuable experience against international opponents.
Nigeria Targets Strong Performance Across Both Divisions
With five male and five female boxers representing the country, Nigeria will compete in both divisions as it seeks to make a strong impression at the continental event.
The championships will give the athletes an opportunity to assess their technical skills, tactical discipline and physical readiness against boxers from other African nations. Strong performances could also boost their confidence and improve their prospects in future international competitions.
Nigeria has a long history of producing boxers who have represented the country at major sporting events, including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and African championships. The Nairobi competition offers another platform to assess the progress of the current crop of athletes and determine how well they measure up against elite opposition.
Beyond the prospect of winning medals, the event could help highlight areas where additional training, technical support and investment are needed to improve the country’s performance in international boxing.
However, Nigeria’s success will ultimately depend on how well the boxers perform in the ring, the quality of their opponents and their ability to turn their preparations into positive results.
NSC Urges Boxers to Represent Nigeria With Excellence
The National Sports Commission has expressed confidence in the Nigerian contingent and urged the athletes to approach the competition with discipline, determination and a strong commitment to excellence.
In the statement issued by Daniel, the commission encouraged the team to uphold Nigeria’s reputation for competitiveness and responsible representation on the international stage.
The message underscores the importance of both sporting performance and conduct as the boxers prepare to face opponents from across the continent.
For the NSC and boxing administrators, the championship will also provide an opportunity to evaluate the athletes in a competitive international environment. Their performances could help identify existing strengths, reveal areas that require improvement and guide preparations for subsequent assignments.
The experience gained in Nairobi may also contribute to the long term development of Nigerian boxing by exposing the athletes to different fighting styles, competitive demands and technical approaches.
Nigerian Delegation Set for October 15 Opening
The 19 member delegation is scheduled to leave Nigeria on Tuesday and arrive in Kenya the following day, ahead of the championship’s opening on Thursday, October 15.
The early arrival is expected to give the athletes and officials time to prepare for the competition and attend to the necessary administrative and technical arrangements.
However, the NSC statement did not provide the names of the 10 boxers, their individual weight categories or the full list of delegation members. Further details would offer a clearer picture of Nigeria’s medal prospects and the potential matchups awaiting the team.
The inaugural African Boxing Elite Championships will run until October 28, bringing together elite boxers from across the continent.
For Team Nigeria, the immediate challenge will be to translate its preparations into strong performances while gaining experience that could prove valuable in future continental and global competitions.
As the team prepares to fly the Nigerian flag in Nairobi, expectations will centre on the athletes’ ability to compete confidently, secure victories and establish themselves among Africa’s leading elite boxers.
