What was meant to be a routine political exercise has taken a tragic turn in Idanre, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congress in Ondo State descended into violent chaos. Reports indicate that at least two people lost their lives after being shot by suspected gunmen during the exercise, leaving the local community in a state of mourning and shock.
The violence did not stop at the loss of life, as three other individuals sustained various degrees of injuries during the bloody confrontation at the congress venue. Eyewitnesses described a scene of absolute terror, with residents forced to run for their lives as sporadic gunfire echoed through the streets, creating a wave of panic across many parts of the town.
The situation grew even more personal within the party’s leadership circles. Allegations have surfaced that the younger brother of the State Chairman of the ruling party, Ade Adetimehin, was targeted and attacked by thugs. This follows a separate incident just days prior, where he was reportedly beaten at the party secretariat on Tuesday.
The physical destruction in Idanre was visible, with at least one vehicle set ablaze and left smoldering in the middle of the crisis. While political gatherings are expected to be venues for organization and consensus, this particular congress has instead left behind a trail of blood and property damage, raising serious concerns about the safety of such exercises in the region.
