The United Kingdom is strengthening its economic and digital partnership with Abia State as part of efforts to support investment, job creation, innovation and inclusive growth.
The British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, made this clear during a two day visit to the state, which focused on its growing role in entrepreneurship, technology and economic development.
During the visit, Baxter met with Abia State Governor Alex Otti and held discussions with civil society and electoral stakeholders. He also visited the Geometric Power Plant and took part in the State Level Policy, Regulatory and Institutional Reforms Enabling Digital Transformation programme.
The programme, known as SPRIRET, is being implemented under the UK’s Digital Access Programme and brings together public and private sector stakeholders. Its focus is to strengthen the policies, regulations and institutions needed to support wider access to digital services in Abia.
According to the UK Mission in Nigeria, talks between Baxter and Governor Otti centred on opportunities to expand cooperation between the UK and Abia in areas including trade, investment, innovation, education, energy and digital development.
The discussions also touched on democratic governance and preparations for upcoming elections, with emphasis placed on maintaining a peaceful and inclusive political environment.
The visit further highlighted the UK’s interest in supporting Abia’s efforts to create an environment where businesses can grow, attract investment and generate employment.
Through deeper cooperation in technology, energy, education and economic development, both sides are seeking to strengthen the foundation for sustainable growth and greater opportunities for people and businesses across the state.
