The Benin Club Golf Section in Benin City was a scene of elegance and high-level competition recently as the Ignatius Aigbokhaode @ 60 Pro-Am Golf Tournament came to a grand close. The four-day event, which celebrated the diamond jubilee of Ignatius Aigbokhaode, successfully blended the intensity of professional sports with the warm camaraderie of a milestone birthday celebration.

On the course, the competition was fierce as golfers across various categories vied for the top spots. Felix Utaji, playing off a handicap of 11, secured a net score of 71 to lead the pack in the handicap 0-12 category. In the ladies’ division, former Lady Captain Nkeiruka Awiaka displayed remarkable form, turning in a net score of 70 to clinch the handicap 0-28 title. Other notable performances included Ehis Igbinadolor, who took home the best gross trophy, and Osazee Iyare, who dominated the long drive competition.

The professional circuit provided its own share of drama, with John Ochei delivering a stellar performance to win the professionals’ challenge with a gross score of 72. He was closely followed by Chukwudi Okoro, who finished just one stroke behind. Meanwhile, the special category saw former captain Dr. Bola Atua emerge victorious, while Destiny Okoh and A. Aburime claimed the prizes for guest ladies and men respectively.

Beyond the trophies and scores, the event served as a heartfelt tribute to the celebrant. The closing ceremony featured moving goodwill messages from dignitaries, a ceremonial cake cutting, and a gala reception that radiated class. During his vote of thanks, Aigbokhaode expressed deep gratitude to God for reaching 60 in good health and thanked the sponsors and the organizing committee, led by Hon. Andrew Momodu, for putting together a tournament that mirrored his values of friendship and excellence.

Reflecting on the success of the week, the organizing committee chairman, Hon. Momodu, noted that the turnout was a testament to Aigbokhaode’s impact on both the sport and his community. He remarked that the tournament did more than just mark a birthday; it highlighted the unique ability of golf to bring together captains of industry and professionals from all walks of life in the spirit of healthy living and unity.
