Welbeck Returns to Haunt Man Utd as Brighton Secure FA Cup Upset

Brighton & Hove Albion once again turned Old Trafford into a theater of disappointment for Manchester United, knocking the Red Devils out of the FA Cup with a clinical 2-1 victory. The third-round clash saw former United striker Danny Welbeck return to haunt his boyhood club, netting a decisive second-half goal that effectively ended United’s hopes of domestic silverware this season.

United actually started the game with plenty of energy, putting Brighton under immediate pressure. Diogo Dalot had a golden opportunity to open the scoring within the first two minutes after being played through by Matheus Cunha, but Jason Steele produced a sharp save to deny him. Bruno Fernandes also forced Steele into an acrobatic stop from distance as the hosts looked to assert their dominance early on.

However, against the run of play, Brighton struck first in the 12th minute. A cross from the left led to a header by Georginio Rutter that was heroically cleared off the line by Lisandro Martínez, only for Brajan Gruda to pounce on the rebound and smash it into the roof of the net. The goal shifted the momentum, allowing the visitors to sit back and exploit the spaces left by a frustrated United side.

The second half followed a similar pattern of United possession without much penetration. Interim manager Darren Fletcher looked to the bench, introducing youth sensation Shea Lacey and striker Joshua Zirkzee to spark a comeback. But the mountain became much steeper in the 64th minute when Welbeck, captaining the Seagulls for the day, received a pass from Gruda and lashed a powerful left-footed strike into the top corner.

There was a late glimmer of hope for the Old Trafford faithful when Benjamin Šeško rose highest to head home a Fernandes corner in the 85th minute. The stadium erupted as United threw everything forward in search of an equalizer, but their momentum was halted when Shea Lacey was shown a second yellow card for dissent just before stoppage time, leaving the Red Devils with ten men.

This exit marks a particularly painful low for Manchester United, who have now been eliminated from both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup in their opening matches for the first time since the 1981-82 season. After their shock penalty shootout loss to League Two’s Grimsby Town earlier in the campaign, United now face a long and quiet road to the end of the season with only Premier League standings left to fight for.
