The 2026 FIFA World Cup is taking a brief pause, with Wednesday marking the tournament’s first official break since the knockout rounds got underway.
After weeks of almost nonstop football across the United States, Canada and Mexico, fans will have to wait a little longer for the next round of action as FIFA gives the remaining teams time to recover ahead of the quarter finals.
The competition has now been narrowed down to eight teams, leaving just seven matches to decide who will be crowned world champions. With the field reduced and the stakes rising, the match schedule has been spaced out to allow players more recovery time between games, especially after the demands of an expanded 48 team tournament.
The added rest is seen as necessary given the intensity of the competition so far. Teams that make it all the way to the final will have played as many as eight matches, while players have also had to deal with long travel distances across North America and the difficult summer weather conditions in host cities.
Action will resume on Thursday with the first quarter final, as the race for a place in the last four enters a crucial stage.
The quarter finals are scheduled to run from July 9 to July 11, followed by another rest day on July 13. The semi finals will then be played on July 14 and 15, before the third place match on July 18. The tournament final is set for July 19.
There will still be three more match free days before the competition wraps up. No fixtures are scheduled for July 13 ahead of the semi finals, or on July 16 and 17 as the countdown begins for the final weekend of the tournament.
