Chelsea F.C have officially appointed former Liverpool F.C. midfielder Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager on a four year deal set to begin in July.
The appointment comes after months of uncertainty surrounding Chelsea’s managerial situation, with the club hoping Alonso can restore stability and guide the team back to competing consistently at the highest level.
The 44 year old Spaniard became available earlier this year after leaving Real Madrid CF by mutual agreement, despite still having time left on his contract.
Before that, Alonso enjoyed an impressive spell with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, where he made history by leading the club to its first ever Bundesliga title in 2024. He also helped the German side secure the German Cup during his time in charge.
Chelsea confirmed Alonso’s appointment shortly after their FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City F.C., a result that further increased pressure on the club to find long term direction.
The London club has experienced a turbulent season with multiple changes in the dugout. Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior both handled managerial duties during the campaign, while interim boss Calum McFarlane remains in temporary charge for Chelsea’s remaining Premier League fixtures.
Speaking after the announcement, Alonso described Chelsea as one of the biggest football clubs in the world and said he feels honoured to take over the role.
He explained that discussions with the club’s leadership convinced him that both sides share the same ambition of building a strong team capable of challenging for major trophies regularly.
Alonso also praised the quality within Chelsea’s squad and expressed excitement about helping the club grow while creating a winning culture.
During his playing career, Alonso spent five successful years at Liverpool and was part of the side that famously won the UEFA Champions League in 2005. He also played for Real Sociedad, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
At international level, the former midfielder earned 114 appearances for Spain national football team and played a key role in the country’s golden era, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and two UEFA European Championship titles.
