A tragic lone accident on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway has claimed the lives of eleven people after their vehicle plunged off the Eruku Bridge on Sunday night. The Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, detailing a harrowing scene that has once again sparked concerns over road safety during night travels.
The vehicle involved, a gold Toyota with registration number GGE 722 KJ, was reportedly traveling toward its destination when it lost control, somersaulted several times, and crashed off the bridge. The impact was so severe that the doors of the vehicle became jammed, trapping all occupants inside as it came to a rest.
Emergency responders from the Itori Unit Command were quickly dispatched to the site, where they were joined by members of the local community in a difficult rescue mission. To recover the victims, the team had to dismantle parts of the wreckage. Unfortunately, all eleven people on board—ten adult males and one adult female—were confirmed dead at the scene.
The remains of the victims have since been moved to the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo. Preliminary investigations by the authorities suggest that the crash may have been caused by a combination of overloading and driving under the influence. Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi noted that these factors significantly increased the severity of the accident and hampered any chance of survival for the passengers.
In the wake of this tragedy, road safety officials have issued a stern warning to motorists plying the Abeokuta-Lagos route to prioritize caution and avoid the risks associated with night driving. While expressing deep condolences to the grieving families, the command stressed the importance of adhering to passenger limits and maintaining sobriety behind the wheel to prevent further loss of life on the nation’s highways.
