The national secretariat of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has officially declared that Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso will not be eligible to run for the presidency on its platform in the upcoming 2027 elections. This announcement marks a significant turning point for the party as it navigates a period of intense internal restructuring and legal battles.
According to a statement released by the party’s National Secretary, Ogini Olaposi, the NNPP is moving toward a more transparent and constitutionally grounded process for selecting its next presidential flagbearer. Olaposi explained that the decision to bar the former Kano State Governor is rooted in the party’s desire to uphold its internal rules and demonstrate a commitment to democratic principles over individual interests.
This bold move comes at a time when the NNPP is grappling with deep-seated factional disputes and several ongoing court cases. As reported by Reports, there is already a standing court judgment that recognizes a leadership faction distinct from the one loyal to Kwankwaso. These legal complications have created a cloud of uncertainty over which group truly holds the authority to nominate candidates for future polls.
Beyond the headquarters in Abuja, the political landscape for Kwankwaso has become increasingly complex. He is currently locked in a heated political face-off with the sitting Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, a development that has further strained his influence within the very party he helped bring to national prominence.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the NNPP leadership seems intent on rebranding. Olaposi mentioned that the party is now open to forming strategic alliances with other like-minded political organizations. The party hierarchy believes that by enforcing these new boundaries, they can strengthen the NNPP’s unity and restore its integrity as a credible democratic alternative in Nigeria’s political space.
