As the 2027 general elections draw closer, the African Democratic Congress has mounted pressure on the Independent National Electoral Commission, demanding the immediate and unrestricted release of Permanent Voter Cards to all eligible citizens who have completed their registration.
The opposition party made its position known through a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, warning that withholding or delaying the distribution of the cards amounts to indirect voter suppression. The party stressed that millions of Nigerians who took the time to participate in the voter registration exercise deserve absolute clarity regarding when and where they can claim their cards.
The party argued that registering citizens only to subject them to endless bureaucratic runarounds between various offices defeats the fundamental purpose of democracy. True participation requires unfettered access to the tools of voting, and holding back these cards creates an administrative barrier that effectively silences legitimate voters.
To clear any ambiguity, Reports gathered that the party has challenged the electoral umpire to release a transparent, state-by-state breakdown detailing the total number of newly registered voters, cards successfully produced, figures already distributed, outstanding balances, and specific collection centers. Furthermore, the political platform urged INEC to decentralize the collection process and ramp up public awareness campaigns so that distance and poor communication do not become stumbling blocks for eager citizens.
The statement emphasized that waiting until the eleventh hour to address logistical hurdles compromises the overall credibility of the electoral process. Leaving voters to wonder whether their credentials will arrive in time invites unnecessary panic and mistrust.
Demonstrating its commitment to the democratic process, the party announced that its structures across the country will be fully mobilized to monitor how the cards are distributed.
