2Baba Names Burna Boy as the Global Leader of the Afrobeats Scene

Innocent Idibia, the legendary musician popularly known as 2Baba, has weighed in on the long-standing debate surrounding the “Big Three” of Afrobeats. In a recent conversation that has quickly caught the attention of music lovers across the continent, the “African Queen” star suggested that Burna Boy currently holds the crown, placing him ahead of his contemporaries, Davido and Wizkid, in terms of global influence.

During an appearance on the Mic On Podcast, 2Baba was asked to share his perspective on the current crop of Nigerian superstars. The veteran artist was careful to state that he has deep respect and personal favorite songs from all three artists. However, when pushed to give a definitive answer, he noted that Burna Boy’s recent trajectory seems to be on an entirely different trajectory.

2Baba explained that his assessment isn’t about who has the most money or whose voice is technically “better,” as music is ultimately a matter of personal taste. He likened artists to painters, each creating a unique masterpiece that shouldn’t necessarily be compared to another. He admitted he doesn’t have access to their bank accounts or private business successes, but based on his seasoned understanding of the industry, the “Last Last” singer is currently the one to beat.

According to 2Baba, Burna Boy isn’t just leading the pack within the borders of Nigeria or even Africa, but he has carved out a space at the very top of the global music chain. While he acknowledged that everyone in the top tier is doing a fantastic job representing the country, he feels that Burna Boy’s current momentum is undeniable and unmatched at this moment.

The debate over who truly leads the Nigerian music scene between Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy has been a constant fixture in pop culture for years. 2Baba’s comments add a significant perspective to this rivalry, coming from a man many consider the godfather of the modern Afrobeats era.
