A heartbreaking incident in Florida has claimed the life of a two year old boy after he was accidentally shot by his four year old cousin with a handgun that had been left unsecured inside a vehicle.
The tragic event occurred on Sunday afternoon in Kissimmee, where deputies responded to reports of a child suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim, identified as Brayden Tennyson, was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries. Authorities noted that he would have celebrated his third birthday the following Tuesday.
According to investigators, the two children had been left alone inside the parked vehicle when the older child found a handgun belonging to Brayden’s mother. The firearm had reportedly been left unsecured and fully accessible. While handling it, the gun discharged, striking the younger boy.
Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon described the circumstances as deeply distressing, explaining that the weapon had been left completely exposed inside the vehicle. He said that although storing a firearm in a holster may provide an extra layer of protection, in this case the gun was left openly within reach, making it easy for a young child to pick up with devastating consequences.
The family had travelled from Louisville, Georgia, to Florida for a vacation and were staying at a rented property when the incident occurred. Investigators said other family members were still outside the vehicle and had not yet entered the house when they suddenly heard the gunshot.
Authorities confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and indicated that criminal charges are expected. Prosecutors also stated that because the case remains under active investigation, they are unable to release additional information at this stage.
