Adekanbi faced a strong challenge from his fellow competitors, particularly after Uche Nwaokocha set the early pace with a gross score of 75. His performance raised hopes of a possible upset, especially with some of the tournament’s leading contenders, including Muritala Adeola, Peter Okafor and Tunde Oladehinde, yet to take their turns on the course.
However, Adekanbi rose to the occasion, displaying composure, discipline and consistency to maintain his position and secure another championship victory.
The defending champion’s performance over the final three holes proved decisive. He recorded a birdie on the 16th hole, followed by a bogey on the 17th, before finishing with a par on the 18th to seal his victory and retain the crown.
The championship attracted more than 100 caddies from Ikeja Golf Club, Ikoyi Club Golf Section and Abeokuta Golf Club, highlighting the growing interest in the competition. Club members also participated as guest players, lending their support to the caddies and contributing to the event’s competitive atmosphere.
In the junior caddies category, Adeshayo Oladokun emerged victorious with a gross score of 80. Segun Ajayi of Abeokuta Golf Club won the guest players category, while Adeyinka Adelakun of Ikoyi Club Golf Section finished as second runner up.
The ladies category also produced a new champion, as Deborah Asoore dethroned defending champion Felicia Oyebanji with a gross score of 117 to claim the title.
Speaking after the championship, Olugbenga Ayodele, the club’s Caddy Officer and chief organiser of the event, said the competition was designed to identify and develop promising golfing talents while providing a platform for emerging players to demonstrate their abilities.
Ayodele explained that the championship goes beyond celebrating caddies, offering participants valuable opportunities to improve their skills, gain competitive experience and work towards greater achievements in the sport. He added that such initiatives could help nurture amateur golfers capable of representing Nigeria at international competitions.
Special prizes were also presented to participants for outstanding performances in categories such as Nearest to the Pin, Longest Drive and Best Behaved, adding further excitement to the event.
The successful staging of the 2026 championship reflects Ikeja Golf Club’s continued commitment to promoting golf in Nigeria, improving caddy welfare and creating opportunities for aspiring golfers to develop their talents and compete at higher levels.
