Atletico Madrid have secured the signing of Cristian Romero from Tottenham for a reported fee of 40 million euros including add-ons. The Argentina defender, who lifted the 2022 World Cup, has put pen to paper on a contract running until June 2031.
The club confirmed the deal on Saturday, making Romero their fourth acquisition of the summer after Alejandro Grimaldo, Kang-in Lee and Morten Hjulmand.
After five years in north London, Romero took time to address Tottenham supporters the previous day. He played a key role in ending the club’s 17-year wait for silverware when Spurs defeated Manchester United to win the 2025 Europa League, earning man of the match honours in the final.
In his farewell message, the 28-year-old acknowledged that his time at the club had not been without challenges, but he expressed deep pride and gratitude for the memories he takes away.
His move to Atletico comes just days after fellow Argentine and former teammate Nahuel Molina departed the club for AS Roma in a deal worth around 17 million euros. Romero featured in 156 matches for Tottenham but also served several suspensions during his spell in the Premier League.
