Barcelona and Manchester City have agreed terms for the transfer of Spanish midfielder Rodrigo Hernández Cascante, known as Rodri. The 30-year-old will move to the Catalan club and sign a contract running until 30 June 2030.
Rodri arrives after seven successful years in England, where he became one of the most reliable holding midfielders in the game. He grew up in Atlético Madrid’s academy, moved to Villarreal, earned a quick return to Atlético under Diego Simeone, and then joined Manchester City in 2019. At City he became central to Pep Guardiola’s team, controlling matches from deep, winning possession and setting the tempo. He collected several Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Champions League, and scored the winner in the 2023 final against Inter Milan.
His record with Spain is equally strong. He was a key player when the national team won Euro 2024 and the recent World Cup, and in 2024 he was awarded the Ballon d’Or. Few players arrive at Barcelona carrying that combination of experience and trophies.
What sets Rodri apart is his reading of the game. He rarely appears rushed, often intercepts attacks before they develop, and uses simple, accurate passing to keep his team in control. He can still contribute goals from midfield when needed. Barcelona will also value his professionalism and the example he sets for younger players in the squad.
The club sees this as a long-term signing that brings leadership and balance to the midfield. Rodri, meanwhile, begins a new chapter after his time in England, with attention now turning to his first appearances in the famous Barcelona shirt.
