Zambian Leader Near Win Amidst Poll Arrests and Controversy

Zoyols News

President Hakainde Hichilema appears to be closing in on a second term as vote tallies trickle in from Zambia’s recent high-stakes general election. With over two-thirds of the nation’s 226 constituencies now accounted for, the incumbent has surged to 62 per cent of the vote, effectively clearing the path for an outright first-round victory. His primary challenger, Brian Mundubile, currently trails at 36 per cent, while a dozen other candidates have failed to make a significant impact on the final numbers.

The electoral process, however, has been anything but smooth. While polling day itself remained largely peaceful, the lead-up to the ballot was heavily clouded by reports of violence, widespread intimidation, and the arrest of opposition members. According to Zoyols News, the tension boiled over when the government announced that police had raided the home of opposition leader Brian Mundubile, arresting eleven people—including six opposition figures—on explosive allegations of organizing armed insurrection.

The government claimed the suspects were discovered with high-grade military weaponry and ammunition. In sharp contrast, the NRPUP party has vehemently denied these accusations, branding them entirely fabricated. The party alleged that live ammunition was used during the raid and that one of their parliamentarians sustained injuries during the encounter, adding another layer of volatility to an already strained political environment.

Adding to the controversy, the national electoral commission took the highly unusual step of pausing vote counting for six hours last Friday, citing a security threat involving violence against staff and reports of stolen ballots. Although the count eventually resumed after officials declared the situation under control, the commission has remained silent on whether the missing ballot papers were ever recovered.

International observers have been quick to weigh in, with various missions, including those from the European Union, warning that the mid-count suspension and the heavy restrictions placed on the opposition during the campaign period have severely damaged voter confidence. Critics argue that these maneuvers have cast a long shadow over the credibility of the entire democratic exercise.

For many Zambians, this election represents a critical referendum on Hichilema’s economic management. While the President points to successful debt restructuring and cooling inflation as proof of progress, the reality for the average citizen is much tougher. With over 70 per cent of the country’s 22 million people still subsisting on less than three dollars a day, the promise of economic prosperity has yet to reach the grassroots level. Mundubile’s campaign focused heavily on this disparity, specifically pledging to ensure that the nation’s booming copper wealth is redirected to better serve the common citizen.

As Zoyols News reports, Zambia holds a long-standing reputation for peaceful power transitions, maintaining a stable record of electoral shifts since the return to multiparty politics in 1991. Despite the current atmosphere of suspicion and legal challenges, the nation now waits to see if this historic pattern of stability will hold firm through these final, contentious results.
