The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has shared a surprising behind-the-scenes story involving Nigerian music star Burna Boy. According to the CAF chief, the Grammy-winning artist was briefly detained by customs officials at a Moroccan airport while on his way to headline the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Fan Zone concert in Rabat.
Speaking during a recent press briefing, Motsepe explained that the delay was sparked by the singer’s signature heavy gold jewelry. The impressive collection caught the eye of airport authorities, leading to a temporary hold-up as they conducted their routine checks. The situation reportedly required high-level communication to ensure the artist could proceed to his scheduled performance without further hitches.
Motsepe had to personally step in to resolve the matter. He recounted being contacted about the situation and noted that once he intervened, the customs issues were quickly cleared up. He even jokingly admired the “heavy and beautiful” nature of the jewelry that caused the stir in the first place.
Despite the initial airport drama, Burna Boy successfully made it to the stage on January 16, where he delivered an energetic headline performance. The Fan Zone concert in Rabat was a star-studded affair, celebrating the intersection of African football and music.
The event wasn’t just about the “African Giant,” as it also featured a vibrant lineup of other top talents. Ghanaian star Stonebwoy took to the stage alongside popular Moroccan artists Stormy and Jaylann, making the concert a highlight of the tournament’s cultural festivities.
