A long-standing impasse between maritime transporters and border enforcement authorities has finally eased following the release of 36 impounded haulage trucks. The vehicles, belonging to members of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners, were initially seized during a sweeping investigation into alleged trade violations at the Zarmmak Bonded Terminal in the Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos.
The trouble began when officers attached to the Zone A Federal Operations Unit moved in to seal the terminal premises over suspected breaches of regulatory protocols. Although the exact nature of the infractions under review was kept under wraps, the sudden enforcement action effectively paralyzed transport operations in the axis, leaving many truck owners facing mounting financial losses for an issue they claimed was entirely out of their control.
Relief came after repeated appeals from transport leadership led to a direct intervention by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi. Transport owners had maintained throughout the ordeal that third-party haulage drivers simply transferring goods should not be held liable for administrative or operational lapses tied strictly to the terminal operators.
Confirming the development, the Secretary-General of the trucking association, Sani Mohammed, noted that the resolution has brought immense relief to affected business owners who were caught in the crossfire. He pointed out that the release allows operators to resume normal transit activities and cushion the severe economic hit suffered during the prolonged detention of their assets.
In a statement outlining the resolution, industry leaders commended the top administrative leadership for taking a compassionate stance that prioritizes legitimate trade facilitation and constructive stakeholder dialogue.
Defense of the initial enforcement action came from the Zone A Federal Operations Unit, where leadership maintained that the operation was executed strictly to uphold existing trade laws and curb irregularities. Efforts by Zoyols News to reach the management of Zarmmak Bonded Terminal for comment were unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent prior to publication went unanswered.
