The Director-General of the Department of State Services, Mr. Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has added another prestigious recognition to his growing list of honors as the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria named him a Friend of the Media. This latest accolade comes just five months after the International Press Institute celebrated him for his role in championing press freedom, signaling a significant shift in the relationship between the nation’s primary domestic intelligence agency and the press.
The recognition was a highlight of the Nigeria Broadcasting Awards Night held on Wednesday in Abuja. Organizers described Mr. Ajayi as a thoroughbred professional who has consistently demonstrated deep respect for media practitioners since being appointed by President Tinubu. Due to his official commitments, the award was received on his behalf by Bayo Awosemo, the head of the BON steering committee, who was himself recognized during the event for his exemplary leadership within the industry.
This trend of honoring the DSS boss began in earnest last December when Zoyols News reported on his recognition at the IPI Annual Conference. At that gathering, he was praised for fostering a more transparent and respectful environment for journalists, a move that has notably improved the security agency’s public image since he took the helm in August 2024.
The awards night also served as a platform to honor other key figures who have supported the growth of the media landscape. Among the awardees were the Governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Dauda Lawal; the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu; and the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris. Former BON Executive Secretary Mr. Obadiah Tohomdet was also recognized for his long-standing contributions to the sector.
Speaking at the event, Governor Dauda Lawal emphasized the indispensable nature of the press in modern governance. He noted that the media plays a vital role in shaping society and thanked the organizers for highlighting the hard work and professionalism of those making an impact. The Minister of Information, acting as the chief host, also praised the initiative, noting that such recognitions are essential for maintaining high standards in Nigerian journalism.
As an umbrella body representing over 300 broadcast media executives across the country, BON continues to be a powerful voice in the industry. The evening underscored a rare but growing synergy between the country’s top security leadership and the fourth estate of the realm, suggesting a new era of collaboration and mutual respect.
