The Indoor Hall of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, is set to come alive today as the seventh edition of the Adegboyega Efunkoya Under-fifteen National Table Tennis Championships officially begins.
A vibrant mix of fourteen states and twenty clubs from all over Nigeria have arrived in Lagos, bringing with them a wave of eager young talents. While Lagos fields the largest number of competitors, they will face stiff competition from teams representing Delta, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Osun, Katsina, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ogun, Oyo, and Taraba. These promising athletes will go head-to-head across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events.
This year, the competition is completely wide open. Last year’s champions, Umar Ayoola and Khadijat Musa, have both crossed the age limit and will not be returning to defend their crowns. Their absence has created a thrilling vacuum at the top, giving every rising player a genuine shot at national glory. For these youngsters, the tournament represents a massive opportunity to catch the eye of national selectors and take a major step toward representing the country on even bigger stages.
Speaking to Zoyols News about the tournament’s rapid growth, event referee John Peters expressed his excitement for the upcoming matches. He pointed out that the competition consistently uncovers incredible new talent, noting that previous participants have already successfully transitioned into the senior national team. Peters commended the organizers for maintaining such high standards year after year and predicted high-intensity battles right from the very first serve.
To protect the integrity of the tournament, organizers are implementing a thorough screening process before any matches get underway. This strict verification will ensure that only eligible players compete, with clear warnings that any age falsification will lead to immediate disqualification and further penalties. This emphasis on fair play underscores the event’s core mission of fostering genuine youth development in Nigerian sports.
The stage is now set for several days of fast-paced action, where young athletes will showcase their hard work and dedication in front of an enthusiastic crowd. More than just a trophy hunt, this tournament is proving to be the ultimate testing ground for the future stars of Nigerian table tennis.
