The strength of storytelling combined with creativity and modern filmmaking tools once again came into focus as MTN Nigeria rewarded the creators of an outstanding short film with a cash prize of five million naira.
The recognition took place at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, where MTN Nigeria restated its commitment to supporting emerging filmmakers and promoting African storytelling through consistent investment in platforms that identify and reward creative talent.
As sponsor of the Best Short Film category, MTN presented the five million naira prize to the makers of Hussaini, a short film created by Orire Nwani and Josh Olaoluwa. The production stood out for its strong narrative, technical quality and creative execution, earning it top recognition at the event.
Speaking during the presentation, the Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Nigeria, Onyinye Ikenna Emeka, said the company remains focused on empowering young people and supporting the creative sector through initiatives that highlight emerging voices in filmmaking.
She noted that MTN places strong value on youth development, adding that young Nigerians continue to push boundaries through creativity and innovation. According to her, the short film category is one of the ways the brand supports and encourages that growth.
The success of Hussaini further reinforces how short form films are becoming an important entry point for young creatives, giving them the opportunity to showcase original African stories while making use of modern production tools to reach wider audiences.
One of the filmmakers behind the project described the win as a major milestone, especially after previous nominations, calling it a rewarding moment for the team.
Beyond the main award category, MTN also extended its support through initiatives such as Young Filmmakers Day and the MTN Film Challenge. Through these platforms, several upcoming creators were rewarded for their work, with five filmmakers receiving cash prizes totaling four point six five million naira for short films that reflected Nigerian culture and everyday life. Two other finalists also received consolation rewards.
The Young Filmmakers Day event, held at MultiChoice Studios in Lagos, brought aspiring creators together with established industry professionals for discussions and masterclasses focused on storytelling, career growth and filmmaking skills. Industry figures such as Uche Jombo, Orire Nwani, Tamara Adeyemi and Stan Eze shared insights with participants during the sessions.
Observers in the industry note that as digital tools continue to make filmmaking more accessible, short films are increasingly becoming a strong platform for discovering fresh talent and sharing authentic African stories with global audiences.
Through its continued investment in initiatives like the AMVCA sponsorship, Young Filmmakers Day and the MTN Film Challenge, MTN Nigeria continues to position itself as a key supporter of emerging creatives and a strong contributor to the growth of Africa’s entertainment industry.
