Meta has expanded its artificial intelligence efforts with the introduction of the Meta Business Agent, a new AI powered assistant created to help businesses manage customer engagement and day to day operations across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger.
The launch comes as Meta continues to invest heavily in AI technology, following earlier indications from company chief executive Mark Zuckerberg that intelligent digital agents would become a key part of the company’s long term business plans.
One of the major features of the new tool is its ability to communicate directly with customers on behalf of businesses. The AI assistant can respond to inquiries, provide useful information, suggest products, and guide users through available services, helping businesses remain responsive even when human representatives are unavailable. Business owners can still take over conversations whenever they choose.
Beyond customer support, the Meta Business Agent is also designed to assist with sales activities. It can recommend products based on customer needs, identify promising leads, handle appointment bookings, and support routine customer service tasks. This allows businesses to save time while improving engagement with potential buyers.
The technology has already undergone extensive testing in several countries. Meta disclosed that more than one million businesses participated in the trial phase, which took place in markets including India, Mexico, and Brazil. Following those tests, the company has begun expanding access to businesses using its messaging platforms.
Meta’s ambitions for the tool extend well beyond answering messages. The company envisions a future where AI agents can help manage broader business operations. Among the capabilities being developed are market research assistance, trend analysis, calendar management, competitive intelligence, and other administrative functions that could help businesses operate more efficiently. While many of these features are still being developed, interested businesses have the option of joining a waitlist for future access.
Although the service is currently available at no cost to eligible businesses, Meta has indicated that this arrangement will not be permanent. The company plans to introduce paid options in the coming months as part of its broader strategy to generate revenue from its growing portfolio of AI powered products.
The introduction of the Meta Business Agent marks a significant shift in how artificial intelligence is being integrated into digital communication platforms. Rather than serving only as an automated response system, the technology is being positioned as a virtual business assistant capable of supporting customer service, boosting sales, managing appointments, and eventually handling more advanced operational responsibilities.
As more businesses rely on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger to connect with customers, Meta believes AI agents could become an essential tool for improving efficiency, strengthening customer relationships, and supporting business growth on a larger scale.
