Sky B, a veteran Nigerian singer best known for his hit track Pray For Me, has voiced deep frustration over what he sees as a lack of appreciation from some of the newer generation of artistes, including global star Burna Boy.
Speaking during a recent episode of the KAA Truth Podcast, the Port Harcourt based musician reflected on his early influence in the city’s music scene, insisting that he and a few others played a key role in laying the foundation that later helped many artistes gain visibility and success.
He explained that during those early years, he made personal sacrifices and even invested resources to support rising talents from Rivers State. According to him, artistes such as Timaya and Mr 2Kay benefitted from the environment and opportunities that pioneers like him helped create.
Sky B also recalled a situation where, according to him, an artiste declined an opportunity to share the stage with him at an event after being approached through a government official. He claimed the decision was influenced by a refusal to perform alongside him despite earlier support he had extended.
Although he admitted he did not personally assist Burna Boy during the early stages of his career, Sky B argued that the Grammy winning artiste still came from a scene built by earlier Port Harcourt musicians. He expressed disappointment that, in his view, there had been no gesture of support or collaboration in return.
He said a simple collaboration or financial assistance at a difficult point in his career could have made a significant difference, especially given Burna Boy’s global success today.
Sky B further suggested that divisions within the music industry and regional bias may have contributed to the lack of recognition he feels he deserves. He maintained that pioneers of the Port Harcourt music movement should not be forgotten, as their efforts helped shape the careers of many of today’s celebrated stars.
