Google has begun a major shift in its Search product, building it around autonomous artificial intelligence agents and more personalised task based experiences, as competition in the global AI space continues to intensify.
The announcement was made during the company’s annual developer event in Mountain View, California, where it introduced a redesigned Search system powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash. The lightweight but advanced model will now serve as the default engine behind Google’s AI Mode across global markets.
According to the company, the update reflects a broader change in how people interact with information online. Instead of relying mainly on keyword searches and website links, users are increasingly turning to conversational tools that can respond directly, summarise content, and even carry out tasks on their behalf.
Google described the evolution of Search as a shift from a simple information tool into a more active digital assistant that can anticipate user needs and respond in real time.
The company also revealed that its AI Mode feature, launched just a year ago, has already grown rapidly to more than one billion monthly users. It added that usage continues to rise sharply as more people adopt AI driven search experiences.
A key part of the redesign is a new Search interface that can handle longer and more complex prompts. It also supports multiple input types at once, including images, documents, videos and browser tabs, allowing users to interact with Search in a more natural and flexible way.
Google is also introducing what it calls Search agents, which are autonomous AI systems designed to monitor information across the web continuously. These agents can track updates such as property listings, product drops or live events and then deliver summaries without users having to repeat searches.
The feature will first be available to subscribers of Google AI Pro and Ultra plans later this year, marking another step in the company’s move toward more independent AI driven tools.
Beyond that, Google is expanding booking functions within Search. Users will be able to request detailed services and local experiences, including reservations for venues or direct contact with businesses through AI assisted voice interactions.
One of the more advanced features introduced is a system known internally as Antigravity. It allows Search to generate custom interfaces and small applications on demand, powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash. These can include dashboards, charts, simulations and other interactive tools created instantly within search results.
The company explained that this could eventually support everyday planning activities such as organising events, fitness routines or relocation plans, with personalised dashboards that pull live data from maps, reviews and weather updates.
Google is also widening its Personal Intelligence features to nearly 200 countries and close to 100 languages. This will allow users to connect services such as Gmail and Google Photos, with plans to expand integration with tools like Google Calendar for more context aware responses.
The rollout reflects a wider race among major tech companies to embed generative artificial intelligence deeper into everyday consumer products. This shift is expected to reshape how people discover information online, how traffic flows across the internet and how digital advertising operates.
For Google, whose revenue is still largely tied to Search, the transition presents both opportunity and uncertainty. While AI generated answers may keep users within its ecosystem for longer periods, they could also reduce traffic to external websites that have traditionally supported the wider web economy.
Even with these challenges, the company says it is focused on positioning Search as the main entry point into the next phase of artificial intelligence driven computing.
Google described the update as the beginning of a new chapter for Search, saying users will now be able to ask more complex questions and expect Search to do far more of the work than ever before.
