Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to a robust security partnership with the Nigerian Navy, identifying safety as the essential foundation for any meaningful development. The Governor made this known in Calabar during a courtesy visit from the Commandant of NNS Victory, Commodore Shuaibu Ahmed, noting that the state’s progress is tied directly to its peace and stability.
Governor Otu described the visit as a vital step toward consolidating the long-standing relationship between the state government and naval authorities. He emphasized that his vision for a prosperous Cross River is anchored on sustainable development, which can only be achieved in an atmosphere of order and collective vigilance. He noted that no society can truly thrive when insecurity is allowed to take root.
During the session, the Governor expressed deep appreciation for the professionalism and sacrifices of the officers and men of the Nigerian Navy. He specifically highlighted their role in securing maritime corridors, which he credited with curbing criminal activities and boosting economic confidence across the state. Otu maintained that security is a shared duty that requires constant communication and trust between all agencies and the government.
In response to operational needs raised during the meeting, the Governor assured the naval leadership of his administration’s continued support. He promised that the state would work within its available resources to provide the necessary backing to enhance the Navy’s effectiveness. He stressed that his office would engage constructively to ensure that naval operations in the region are not hindered by avoidable challenges.
Earlier, Commodore Shuaibu explained that the visit was part of the traditional military process of introducing new command leadership to the state executive. Having recently assumed his role, the Commandant noted the importance of aligning the Navy’s operational focus with the strategic priorities of the Cross River State government.
The Commodore expressed his gratitude for the cooperation his team has received so far, stating that it has significantly improved their ability to discharge their duties. He pointed out that as security challenges evolve, there is an increasing need to strengthen infrastructure and communication systems. He concluded by reaffirming the Navy’s readiness to support the state in ensuring that citizens can go about their daily lives without fear.
