Renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, are currently mourning the tragic loss of one of their twin sons, Nkanu Nnamdi. The young boy, who was just 21 months old, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, following a brief illness.
The family expressed their deep devastation over the sudden loss. Through a family representative, they appealed to the general public and the media to grant them the space and seclusion needed during this incredibly painful time. The family noted that no further public comments will be made, asking instead for grace and prayers as they grieve in private.
The news has drawn an outpouring of sympathy from prominent figures across the country. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a personal message of condolence, shared his own perspective as a father who has experienced the pain of losing a loved one. He noted that no grief is quite as overwhelming as the loss of a child and prayed that the literary icon and her family find the strength to navigate this trying hour.
Similarly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar took to social media to offer his support, expressing that his heart goes out to the couple. He emphasized that the loss of a child is a unique kind of sorrow that words can hardly heal. Other leaders, including Peter Obi, also reached out, sharing that they had been following the child’s health struggles with hope before the heartbreaking news arrived.
This profound loss comes during what has been a significant period for the author, who only recently shared the joy of her twins’ arrival with the world in 2025. As the literary community and fans worldwide continue to send their sympathies, the focus remains on supporting the family’s request for privacy and peace during their time of mourning.
