The Israeli military has launched an investigation into the conduct of one of its soldiers after a controversial photograph surfaced online showing the desecration of a statue of the Virgin Mary in southern Lebanon. In the image, which went viral on social media, the soldier is seen with his arm around the sacred figure while placing a cigarette in its mouth.
Responding to the outcry, the military high command stated that it views the matter with extreme seriousness. Officials emphasized that such behavior is a complete departure from the values expected of its personnel. An initial review suggests the photograph was taken several weeks ago during operations in the region. The military has vowed to take disciplinary action based on the final findings of the probe.
This development follows a string of similar incidents that have drawn heavy criticism toward the conduct of Israeli troops regarding religious icons. Just last month, the military was forced to take action after two soldiers were caught on camera destroying a statue of Jesus Christ in the Lebanese village of Debl. In that particular case, a soldier was seen using a sledgehammer on the head of a crucifix that had fallen to the ground. Those involved were reportedly handed 30 days of military detention and stripped of their combat duties.
Despite these recurring controversies, the Israeli military maintains that it holds a deep respect for religious freedom and the sanctity of holy sites. A spokesperson reiterated that there is no official policy or intention to target civilian infrastructure or religious symbols of any faith. However, these recent images have raised serious questions about the level of discipline on the ground as the conflict continues to unfold in southern Lebanon.
