The landscape of Afrobeats is currently undergoing a significant transformation, according to popular Nigerian singer Joeboy. During his recent sold-out Valentine’s Day concert in Lagos, the “Faji” crooner paused his performance to share his thoughts on the current state of the industry. He believes the genre is effectively being “purged” of low-quality or “watered-down” sounds to make room for a return to authentic musicality.
While addressing the crowd, Joeboy explained that the era of relying on gimmicks is quickly fading. He noted that the industry is entering a phase where the music must once again speak for itself. The singer expressed a sense of relief and gratitude that the genre is shifting back into a zone where substance outweighs hype, ensuring that “wack music” no longer finds a comfortable home within the scene.
This shift marks a notable departure from the trends seen at the start of the 2020s. During that period, the Nigerian music scene saw an intense fusion of Afrobeats with several outside influences, most notably South Africa’s Amapiano, alongside American Hip-hop and R&B. While these collaborations helped the genre reach a global audience, many critics argued that the heavy borrowing was beginning to dilute the original essence of the sound.
The tide began to turn more visibly throughout 2024. A growing number of Nigerian artists have started to pull back from over-relying on foreign infusions, opting instead to rediscover the core rhythms that made Afrobeats a powerhouse in the first place. This movement toward “real music” has been met with praise from enthusiasts who have long called for a more organic approach to production.
Although many industry followers admit that it may take some time for the genre to fully reclaim its traditional rhythm, the consensus is that the movement is heading in the right direction. For Joeboy and many of his peers, this renaissance is not just about nostalgia; it is about ensuring the longevity and integrity of Nigerian music on the world stage.
