Veteran Hollywood actor Sam Neill, widely celebrated for his portrayal of Dr Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park film series, has died at the age of 78.
Neill passed away on Monday in Sydney, Australia. His family announced his death in a statement shared on his official Instagram page and obtained by Zoyols News.
Describing the loss as both sudden and unexpected, the family said the acclaimed actor was surrounded by his loved ones during his final moments. They also noted that Neill had remained cancer free before his passing.
The statement expressed the family’s deep sorrow, saying his passing came unexpectedly but with the comfort of knowing he was no longer battling cancer. They added that he died peacefully and with the dignity that defined his life.
The family also thanked the medical team at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for the care and support they provided, expressing appreciation for their dedication throughout his treatment.
They appealed for privacy as they mourn their loss, adding that further details would be made available at a later time.
Neill had previously battled a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer and revealed in April 2026 that he was cancer free.
With an acting career that stretched across more than five decades, Sam Neill earned global recognition for his performances in film and television and remained one of Hollywood’s most respected actors. He is survived by four children and eight grandchildren.
